大学院に進学しようと思った理由を教えてください

学術的な興味および長期的なキャリア形成のためです。学部生時代、物理学、その中でも特に好奇心を刺激し知的な取り組みがいがある分野に出会い、興味がどんどん増していきました。新たな概念を学ぶことに喜びを感じつつ、本当の意味で有意義なインパクトをもたらすためには、専門知識の理解を深めるとともに、先進の教育を通じてスキルを磨く必要があると思いました。大学院は、複雑なテーマをより深く探求していくまたとない機会を提供してくれます。

また、専門分野の知識体系（body of knowledge）に、私も何らかの貢献を果たしたい、という思いもありました。学部での授業や研究では、現実社会の問題について検討することもあり、物理学の知識を応用して未解決の問題に取り組むことの楽しさを知りました。大学院には最先端のリソースや専門家である先生方、コラボレーションやイノベーションを育む学術コミュニティーがそろっており、こうした知的興味を深堀りするのに最高の環境と言えます。

もう一つの大きな要因は、プロフェッショナルとしての長期的目標をかなえるためです。私が選んだ領域では、産業分野であれ、学術分野であれ、大きなインパクトをもたらすにはより高いレベルの専門能力が求められる場合が多いです。就職市場での競争力を高めるためにも、研究テーマについてより深く理解する必要があります。大学院での学びを通じて、さまざまな専門的スキルを身に付けられるだけでなく、その道の専門家としての信頼性も高まります。これによって、より高いレベルのキャリアの道が開かれます。

Please tell us why you decided to go to graduate school.

I decided to pursue graduate school due to my academic interests and long-term career aspirations. During my undergraduate studies, my fascination with physics grew, especially in areas that sparked my curiosity and challenged my thinking. While I enjoyed learning new concepts, I realized that to truly make a meaningful impact, I needed to deepen my understanding of specialized knowledge and refine my skills through advanced education. Graduate school offers the ideal opportunity to explore these complex topics in greater depth.

Furthermore, I had the desire to contribute to the body of knowledge in my field. Through research and coursework during my undergraduate years, I had the opportunity to examine real-world problems, which revealed how much I enjoy applying physics knowledge to address unanswered questions. Graduate school would provide a perfect environment for me to pursue these interests further, offering access to cutting-edge resources, expert faculty members, and an academic community that fosters collaboration and innovation.

Another significant factor was my long-term professional goals. In my chosen field, higher-level expertise is often required to make a meaningful impact, whether in industry or academia. To remain competitive in the job market and to have a more substantial impact in my field, I would need to acquire a deeper understanding of the subject. Graduate school not only provides me with a specialized skill set but also enhances my credibility as an expert in the field, opening more advanced career opportunities.

進学してみて、どうでしたか？

東北大学で学ぶことは常にワクワクするような、自分の変化を感じられる経験であり、また時間が過ぎていく中で、当初抱いていた感情も変化してきました。大学院の歩みを踏み出し始めた時、私はこれから未知の何かに触れ学んでいく、さまざまなアイデアを探求し自分自身に挑戦していく、といった予感のようなものがありました。

私にとって大学院は、興奮と不安の両方を伴う、感情が揺さぶられる歩みです。専門的なテーマに没頭し、研究に従事し、専門分野の知識体系の向上に貢献することに気持ちがたぎる一方で、日本への留学は正しい選択だったのか、自分には厳しい要求や期待に応じる能力が本当にあるのか、自問自答を繰り返しました。最初の数カ月間は、新しい学術基準に適応しなければなりませんでしたし、学部レベルから大学院レベルの研究への移行や新たな文化に慣れるのに苦労しました。しかし、時間がたつにつれて、東北大学で研究を続ける判断は間違っていない、という自信が深まり、生活を楽しむ余裕も生まれてきました。そして、情熱を注ぐ領域を探求していく中で目的意識のようなものが生まれてきました。今では、大学院での経験は、困難を差し引いても価値のあるものになっています。

How did you feel about going to school?

Going to school has always been an exciting and transformative experience for me, filled with a mix of emotions that have evolved over time. At the start of the academic journey, I felt a sense of anticipation, especially towards the prospect of learning something new, exploring different ideas, and challenging myself.

Graduate school has been an emotional journey marked by both excitement and uncertainty. On one hand, the opportunity to delve deeper into specialized topics, engage in research, and contribute to the knowledge in my field has been motivating. On the other hand, there have been moments of self-reflection — questioning whether coming to Japan to pursue further studies was even the right choice and whether I was truly capable of handling the rigorous demands and expectations. The first few months were tough, having to adjust to new academic standards and navigating the transition from undergraduate to graduate-level work, as well as adapting to the culture. But overtime, I felt more confident in my decision to continue my studies here, and I have grown to enjoy my stay here. The sense of purpose that comes with pursuing a field I am passionate about has made the experience extra rewarding, despite the challenges.

研究テーマとそれを選んだ理由を教えて下さい

医用画像から得られたホモロジー特徴を用いた肺疾患、特に放射線肺臓炎の発生予測です。このテーマを選択した理由は、いかに医療分野に物理学の概念を応用することが可能か、強い興味を持ったからです。物理学を医療に応用することで患者さんのQOL向上に貢献できるという点が、この研究テーマをより意義深いものにしていると思います。理論的知識を現実世界のさまざまな用途に生かす経験が、私にとって医学物理学のさらなる進歩を追求するモチベーションになっています。

What is your research topic and why did you choose it?

My research topic is using homology features obtained from medical images to predict occurrence of lung disease, specifically radiation pneumonitis. I chose this topic because I was fascinated to see how physics concepts can be applied to the medical field. By applying physics in medicine, I can contribute to improving patient’s QoL, making the subject even more meaningful. The experience of using theoretical knowledge for real-world applications encourages me to pursue further advancements in medical physics.

研究室の雰囲気はどうですか？

研究室はとても協力的かつ熱心な雰囲気です。オープンなコミュニケーションとチームワークを後押しする環境で、助け合いの精神が培われます。研究室の先生方は常に学生の指導に熱心で、メンターとして研究をサポートしてくださっています。同時に、独立の精神も大切にしており、生徒は自ら率先して研究に取り組むことを期待されています。こうした協力と自立のバランスが、個人の成長にとって理想的な環境を生み出しています。

What are your goals and aspirations for the future?

My goal for the future is to become a researcher in the medical physics field. As a researcher, I aim to work at the intersection of science and medicine, leveraging my knowledge of physics to develop technologies used in medical imaging, radiation therapy, and diagnosis. By contributing to the advancement of these technologies, I want to be part of a global effort to make healthcare more accessible and effective.

仙台の暮らしはどうですか？

仙台では、楽しく記憶に残る経験を味わっています。青葉城址や広瀬川沿いの観光スポットなど、たくさんの場所を散策してきました。仙台はゆったりした雰囲気で、快適かつ穏やかな気分で毎日過ごしています。また、近くには松島や秋保大滝など、息をのむような風景を楽しめる景勝地もあります。身近に自然があることは、私のようなアウトドア派にとって大きなメリットです。

これまでの仙台生活のハイライトの一つは、地元のお祭りを体験したことです。仙台は七夕まつりや青葉まつりなど華やかなお祭りで有名ですが、浴衣で参加した七夕まつりの花火大会は本当に素晴らしく、心を奪われました。故郷では味わったことのない経験でした。こうしたお祭りに参加して日本の文化や伝統とより深くつながり、この地域で紡がれてきた豊かな遺産を肌で感じられました。

How is your life in Sendai?

Life in Sendai has been a memorable and fun experience. I’ve enjoyed exploring many areas, including the beautiful Aoba Castle ruins and the scenic spots along the Hirose River. The city’s relaxed atmosphere has made it a pleasant and peaceful place to stay. Sendai is close to beautiful places like Matsushima and Akiu waterfall, where one can enjoy breathtaking landscapes. This proximity to nature is a big plus for someone like me who loves exploring the outdoors.

One of the highlights has been the opportunity to experience the local festivals. Sendai is famous for its vibrant festivals, such as the Tanabata festival and Aoba matsuri. I was captivated by the stunning fireworks display at Tanabata festival while wearing a yukata, an experience unlike anything I could have back home. These festivals have given me a deeper connection to Japanese culture and tradition, allowing me to appreciate the rich heritage of the region.

趣味や続けていること、休日の過ごし方は？

休日には、近所のカフェ巡りをしています。これは、日本人の友人が、和とフレンチを融合したデザートなど、面白い料理を出すカフェを紹介してくれたことがきっかけでした。それまで、日本がデザートのクオリティーの高さでも有名であることを知りませんでした。それ以来、毎週、カフェを探してはその店の看板メニューにトライしています。私のお薦めは大町西公園の近くにある「Echoes（エコーズ）」という小さなカフェです。このお店のオープンサンドはぜひ試してもらいたいおいしさです！ユニークなデザートも楽しめます。

学業以外では、ナイトサイクリングに出かけたり、協会での礼拝時にバイオリンを演奏したりしています。

What are your hobbies, what do you continue to do, and how do you spend your days off?

I spend my days off exploring different cafes in the neighborhood. This first started when my Japanese friends introduced me to cafes that served interesting dishes, like Japanese French fusion desserts. I didn’t know that Japan was so famous for its exquisite desserts. Since then, it has become a weekly routine for me to explore cafes and try their signature dishes. My recommendation will be Echoes, a small cafe located near Omachi Nishi Koen. They served delectable ‘open sandwiches’, which is a must try, and unique desserts.

Outside of academics, I enjoy night cycling and playing the violin during worship at my church.
