大学院進学を決めたきっかけについて教えてください。

臨床薬剤師としてのキャリアを歩み始めてすぐに、自分が本当にやりたいことは研究だと気付きました。そこで大学院への進学を決め、修士を経て、現在は博士候補生（PhD Candidate）です。私にとって研究とは、キャリアパスの一部であるだけでなく、深い充実感を与えてくれる知的探求活動でもあります。たとえささやかでも、新たな知見を見いだし、複雑な生体システムに対する理解の深化に貢献できることは大きな喜びです。
特にやりがいを感じているのは、研究プロセスそのものです。実験の計画を立て、新たな技法を習得し、改善していく。これら全てが取り組みがいのある課題であり、刺激的な経験となっています。

Could you tell us what made you decide to go to graduate school?

Soon after I began my career as a clinical pharmacist, I realized that my true passion lies in research. This realization motivated me to pursue graduate studies, first through a master’s degree and now as a PhD candidate. For me, research is not only a career path but also a deeply fulfilling intellectual pursuit. I am driven by the excitement of uncovering new knowledge, even in small increments, and contributing to a broader understanding of complex biological systems.
What I find particularly rewarding is the research process itself. Designing experiments, learning new techniques, and refining them―all these are experiences that continually challenge and inspire me.

進学してからはどんな苦労がありましたか。

入学当初は、学部と大学院の教育の違いや、エジプトと日本の学術環境の変化に戸惑いました。大学院は学びの自由度が大幅に高まり、刺激的ではありますが、時間を効率的に使えているか、重要な機会を見落としてはいないか、今していることは将来にどう生かされるかなど、よく自問していました。
それでも、時間とともに環境に慣れ、課題に優先順位を付け、何が必須なのか見極め、より集中的なアプローチで研究活動に取り組む方法を身に付けていきました。こうした変化を通じて、自己規律や独立性を学ぶことができました。おかげで、学業面やキャリア面で不透明な状況に見舞われても乗り越えていけるという自信もつきました。

What challenges did you face after going to school?

At the beginning of my graduate studies, I experienced a sense of confusion, largely due to the differences between undergraduate and postgraduate education as well as the transition from the academic environment in Egypt to that in Japan. Graduate school offers much greater freedom in learning. This is truly exciting, but I often found myself questioning whether I was using my time effectively, whether I might be overlooking important opportunities, and how my efforts would shape my future.
However, over time, I gradually adapted to this environment. I learned how to prioritize tasks, distinguish between what is essential and what is not, and develop a more focused approach to my work. This transition taught me self-discipline and independence, allowing me to become more confident in navigating both academic and professional uncertainties.

研究のテーマと内容について説明をお願いします。

リボソーム衝突と呼ばれる細胞現象についてと、脳腫瘍、特に最も悪性度が高く治療抵抗性の高い膠芽腫に対する治療戦略としての同現象の応用可能性について研究しています。リボソーム衝突とは、mRNA上でリボソームの翻訳が停止して後続のリボソームがぶつかる事象です。これが起こると、タンパク質の恒常性を維持する品質管理経路が活性化します。
このメカニズムを活用し、膠芽腫細胞内でリボソーム衝突が発生しやすいストレス状態を誘導すること、同時にこれを検知・解消する細胞経路を阻害することを目指しています。これら2つのアプローチを組み合わせ、翻訳エラーが繰り返される状態を創出し、がん細胞の選択的死滅につなげるのが最終目標です。

Please explain your research topic and content.

My research focuses on a cellular phenomenon known as ribosome collision and its potential application as a therapeutic strategy for brain cancer, particularly glioblastoma, which is the most aggressive and treatment-resistant form. Ribosome collision occurs when translating ribosomes stall and collide on messenger RNA, triggering quality control pathways that maintain protein homeostasis.
I seek to use this mechanism to induce stress conditions in glioblastoma cells that increase the frequency of ribosome collisions, while simultaneously impairing the cellular pathways responsible for detecting and resolving these events. By combining these two approaches, the goal is to create a feedback loop of translational failure, ultimately leading to the selective death of cancer cells.

研究室はどのような雰囲気でしょう。

研究テーマ、メンバーのバックグラウンド、どちらもバラエティーに富んでいる研究室です。幅広いプロジェクトが行われており、その多様性によって、互いの専門知識から学び合い、自分の専門を超えた技法や視点に触れられ、協力的環境が育まれていると思います。
国際色豊かで活発なコミュニケーションもあり、自然とチームワークや文化交流が生まれています。歓迎会、カラオケ大会、スポーツイベント、ゲーム会などさまざまなイベントを通じて、メンバー間の関係が深まっています。
研究室の選択は、研究テーマや大学の選択と同じくらい重要であると言われますが、研究者としても人間としても大きく成長できる場だと実感しています。

What is the atmosphere like in the lab?

Our lab is characterized by a high degree of diversity, both in terms of research topics and the backgrounds of its members. A wide range of projects are underway, which fosters a collaborative environment where we can learn from one another’s expertise and gain exposure to techniques and perspectives beyond our immediate focus.
In addition, the lab has a vibrant international community, which naturally promotes teamwork and cultural exchange. Various events such as welcome gatherings, karaoke outings, sports events, and game nights help strengthen relationships among members.
It is said that choosing the right laboratory can be just as important—if not more so—than selecting a research topic or even a university. I truly feel that the lab greatly enhances both scientific and personal growth.

今後の目標、将来思い描いていることは。

私が創薬・神経膠腫の研究分野を志したのは、依然として治療が極めて困難な疾患の治療法開発に貢献したいという強い思いからです。自分の研究がいつか、膠芽腫などの疾患を抱える患者さんの苦しみを少しでも緩和できるかもしれない——そんな願いが、大きなモチベーションとなっています。
最終的なブレイクスルーを達成するのは何年も先のことで、それが私ではない可能性もあります。それでも大規模で複雑ながん研究の一部を担っていると信じ、どんなにささやかであろうと貢献したいと思っています。
学問の道を進むのか、企業に就職するのか、いずれのキャリアを歩むにしても、最終的な目標は、人々の生活にほんの少しでも前向きな変化をもたらすことです。

What are your goals and visions for the future?

My decision to pursue a career in drug design and glioma research stems from a strong desire to contribute to the development of treatments for diseases that remain extremely difficult to cure. I am particularly motivated by the hope that, even in a small way, my work may one day help alleviate the suffering of patients affected by conditions such as glioblastoma.
It is possible that the final breakthroughs will be achieved by others, perhaps many years from now. However, I believe I am playing a part in a large-scale complex effort, and want to contribute to it, even in small increments.
Regardless of where my career leads—whether in academia or industry—my goal can be summarized in a single idea: to make a positive difference, however small, in the lives of others.

Please tell us why you chose Tohoku University as your study abroad experience in Japan.

Tohoku University has a strong reputation in medical and life sciences research, particularly in fields related to neuroscience and translational medicine. An environment that emphasizes both fundamental research and its clinical applications was especially appealing to me, as it aligns closely with my interests in cancer therapeutics.
Equally important was the opportunity to join my current laboratory. The diversity of projects and expertise within the lab made it an ideal place for me to grow as a researcher and to gain exposure to different scientific approaches.
I saw studying here as an opportunity not only to advance my academic career but also to challenge myself. I chose Tohoku University because of its strong support for international students, as well as its ideal balance between academic excellence and a welcoming atmosphere.

仙台で暮らしてみての印象を聞かせてください。

仙台は東京などの大都市と比べて、より落ち着いてリラックスした環境で、健康的なワークライフバランスを保ちながら学業に集中するのに最適です。
良いところの一つは交通アクセスです。公共交通機関はよく整備されており、大抵の日用品はすぐに手に入ります。一方で美しい自然に囲まれており、近隣の山々にハイキングに出かけたり、四季の変化を楽しんだりと、常に何か発見があります。
都市ならではの利便性と自然の美しさのバランスが良く、大都市圏のような慌ただしさに巻き込まれることなく、質の高い生活を送ることができます。豊かで充実した日常生活を送りつつ、自分の目標に専念できる街だと思います。

What are your impressions of life in Sendai?

Compared to larger cities like Tokyo, Sendai offers a more peaceful and relaxed environment, which is particularly conducive to focusing on academic work while maintaining a healthy work–life balance.
One of the aspects I appreciate most about Sendai is its accessibility. The city has a well-organized public transportation system, and most daily necessities are easily within reach. At the same time, it is surrounded by beautiful nature. Whether it is hiking in the nearby mountains or enjoying seasonal changes, there is always something to explore.
The city provides a good balance between urban convenience and natural beauty, offering a high quality of life without the overwhelming pace of larger metropolitan areas. I think Sendai is a city where one can focus on their goals while still enjoying a rich and fulfilling daily life.

普段訪れるお気に入りのスポットや休日の過ごし方は？

星陵キャンパス周辺のお気に入りは「お米のトリコ」です。温かく親しみやすい雰囲気の小さなおにぎり店で、店員さんも気さくで、作りたてのおいしいおにぎりを楽しめます。研究の合間に手軽で満足できる食事が取れるので大満足です。
休日は、アウトドア活動を楽しんでいます。初めてのハイキングで出かけた蔵王山の御釜は息をのむような絶景で、忘れられない思い出になりました。その後いくつか他の山にもチャレンジするうちに、もっと体力をつけたいと思うようになり、ジム通いがもう一つの趣味になりました。冬にはスノーボードも始めました。軽い気持ちで研究室の仲間と始めたのですが、あっという間に夢中になっています。

Please tell us how you spend your days off and where you recommend visiting.

My favorite place around Seiryo Campus is Okome no Toriko. It is a small onigiri shop with a warm and welcoming atmosphere, friendly staff, and freshly made, delicious rice balls that are perfect for a quick and satisfying meal between work hours.
I enjoy outdoor activities on my days off. I discovered hiking for the first time at Mount Zao, where the breathtaking view of the Okama crater lake left a lasting impression on me. Since then, I have explored several other mountains, which motivated me to improve my physical stamina. This led me to another hobby: going to the gym. During the winter season, I also started snowboarding. What began as a single small experience with a labmate quickly turned something I became really hooked on.
